The editors draw on diaries; letters; essays; court documents; sermons; wills; plantation records; newspapers; fiction; and advice manuals to reconstruct women's lives and roles during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In addition to sources that convey women's experiences in their own words; the work includes prescriptive and proscriptive materials; most written by men; to further illuminate women's behavior and attitudes. The book is divided into six thematic chapters: sex and reproduction; marriage and family; women's work; religion; politics and the law; and changing gender ideologies. Introductory essays by the editors place each section within historical; cultural; and social context; and each source is annotated with information about the document's author and insightful interpretation of its typicality or its special circumstances. This enriching collection fills a major gap in the study of early American women; and it is sure to stimulate further discussions about both the common and diverse aspects of their lives.

A most unique offering!By T K BrillRemembering the Ladies is more than just a coloring book with wonderful illustrations from many talented artists; it's also a capsulized treasure trove of information about each of these inspirational women; many of whom are well known; but a number of whom have are not but should be. The author has done significant research to craft easily readable; yet engaging biographical summaries. She's also included interesting factoids; suggestions for further reading for various ages; as well as places to visit and websites for further exploration. All ages can enjoy the book; which would be a valuable addition for any school; library; youth and adult club and organization. While It's already offered at a very affordable price; the author makes it even a better value by giving permission for users to make copies for coloring -- great for teachers and librarians! I highly recommend this most timely addition for 2016!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not "just" a coloring book and not "just for kids! Deserves 100+ stars!By RSHSimply incredible! Both the illustrations and accompanying text are entertaining and a "sneaky" way to educate children about many of the great women (past and present) who have played integral roles in our history and who are currently shaping our future. I bought a couple of these to give as gifts; but I'm keeping one to have around the house for myself and my teenagers. The cover states that it is "not just a coloring book"; I would also add that the line it's "not just for kids". And it's Prime eligible to boot--I will be ordering more soon!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This will be fine with one family but possibly not the otherBy Barbara HindanhillChose for two 9 year old cousins (granddaughters). Lots of history--good stories about American women. Most of the 20th Century ladies seem to be Democrats. One of them is Margaret Sanger. This will be fine with one family but possibly not the other. If the parents say anything; I will suggest they rip out that page if they have a problem with it but let her read and color the rest of the book. Also got each of them 12 colored pencils.
