Black Rebellion; a fascinating account of five slave insurrections; among them the story of the Maroons; escaped slaves in the West Indies and South America who successfully resisted larger British armies while living an independent existence for generations in the mountains and jungles of Jamaica and Surinam; of Gabriel Prosser; who recruited about 1;000 fellow slaves in 1800 to launch a rebellion throughout Virginia; of Denmark Vesey; an ex-slave; seaman; and artisan; fluent in several languages; who conspired in 1822 to kill the white citizens of Charleston; South Carolina; and take over the city; and of the revolutionary mystic Nat Turner; who in 1831 organized and led the most successful and dramatic slave revolt in North America. The author also describes how whites responded with panic; sweeping arrests; mass executions; and more repressive laws in a futile effort to crush the slaves' insatiable desire to be free.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. authentic reflection of the revolutionary warBy R. KuiperFor anyone who takes an interest in and wants to learn about the revolutionary war; this book is an absolute must buy. Following the timeline of authentic letters from soldiers and officers on the frontline; British and American; you will find out about the bravery of soldiers on both sides and the arrogance of British generals; helping the Americans to their independence. On various occassions the British could have ended the war in their favor. Time and time again British generals were to busy with their social lives. Both Generals Howe and Clinton prefered to share their social live with their respective mistresses; instead of taking decisive steps in ending this war. Read about what American soldiers had to and indeed did endure; being left alone barefooted and hungry by their own Continental Congress. A war which seemed impossible to be won by the Americans; if not alone for the supremacy of the British army; turned around to enable the foundation of this great nation. General Washington a Chief in Command; who didn't want the job in first place and turned out to be the chief of decision making; tactics and wisdom. The unfotunate General Benedict Arnold; who was a hero in the Canadian Campagne; at Fort Stanwix and ensuring General Gate's victory over general Burgoyne and became a traitor; because he lacked recognition by the American legislative. General Nathaneal Greene; possibly the most important officer; after General Washington; whose capabilities were indispensible to help win this war.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Another Tremendously Good Read!By Gilberto Villahermosa"Rebels and Redcoats" is a tremendously good read recommended for anyone interested in a history of the American Revolutionary War written by those that fought and lived it.Authors George Scheer and Hugh F. Rankin have compiled; organized and edited a comprehensive collection of letters and papers that provide unparalleled insights into the war as it unfolds. Some of the participants; such as Paul Revere; are well known. Most; however; are not; including rank and file American and British soldiers. The result is an extremely well written and compelling chronological history of the American war for independence through the eyes of those that won - and lost - it.Lasting eight years; the Revolutionary War was both America's first long war and civil war. By it ends; four times more American had died (percentage wise) than in World War II. The war showed how hard it is for any nation; no matter how powerful and technologically advanced its military and economy; to defeat a people numerous; armed and far away; possessing strong allies; and fighting for their independence on ground of their own choosing.Anyone interested in a first-hand account of a war that gave birth to the United States of America and changed the world should read this book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring!!!By J. JonesThis is a wonderful and accurate account of the battles of the Revolutionary War; told through the journals and other primary source documents of those who lived through it. The authors do a great job of weaving these primary sources together with an insightful narrative; creating a vivid tapestry of courage and patriotism. From Paul Revere's ride to Washington's heart-wrenching resignation speech; the reader will gain a deeper understanding of what compelled these men and women to sacrifice everything for only a remote chance of living in domestic tranquility. This book is a must=read for anyone who enjoys American Revolutionary history or just needs to learn about it.
