America's urbanites have engaged in many tumultuous struggles for civil and worker rights since the Second World War. In Whose Detroit?; Heather Ann Thompson focuses in detail on the struggles of Motor City residents during the 1960s and early 1970s and finds that conflict continued to plague the inner city and its workplaces even after Great Society liberals committed themselves to improving conditions.Using the contested urban center of Detroit as a model; Thompson assesses the role of such upheaval in shaping the future of America's cities. She argues that the glaring persistence of injustice and inequality led directly to explosions of unrest in this period. Thompson finds that unrest as dramatic as that witnessed during Detroit's infamous riot of 1967 by no means doomed the inner city; nor in any way sealed its fate. The politics of liberalism continued to serve as a catalyst for both polarization and radical new possibilities and Detroit remained a contested; and thus politically vibrant; urban center.Thompson's account of the post-World War II fate of Detroit casts new light on contemporary urban issues; including white flight; police brutality; civic and shop floor rebellion; labor decline; and the dramatic reshaping of the American political order. Throughout; the author tells the stories of real events and individuals; including James Johnson; Jr.; who; after years of suffering racial discrimination in Detroit's auto industry; went on trial in 1971 for the shooting deaths of two foremen and another worker at a Chrysler plant.Bringing the labor movement into the context of the literature of Sixties radicalism; Whose Detroit? integrates the history of the 1960s into the broader political history of the postwar period. Urban; labor; political; and African-American history are blended into Thompson's comprehensive portrayal of Detroit's reaction to pressures felt throughout the nation. With deft attention to the historical background and preoccupations of Detroit's residents; Thompson has written a biography of an entire city at a time of crisis.

Great Book that Expands Worship Beyond the Church Service ExperienceBy kaylin folmarI have not completed this book yet but I have still been very impressed by its content. It is very balanced in its perspective of worship. The most important thing to learned from the book is that everything we do because of Christ is worship. Worship can not be regulated to just church services because worship is a lifestyle. I recommend this book to those who are studying on the power and necessity of worship. I would not recommend basing your whole worship theology on this book but it is an excellent resource to expand your understanding of worship. I am currently reading it as text book at for a Worship Ministry class at the Apostolic School of Theology and it has been very useful to balance our studies on the subject. The author is not Apostolic or Pentecostal but he seems to have good balance of perspective particularly when explaining liturgy. I recommend it for Apostolic readers as long as your realize the limitations to the author's perspective in regards to Holy Ghost led worship in Church. His ideas are great to encourage worship as an everyday journey with God.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Another Hidden Jewel Addressing A Relevant Christian TopicBy commentmamaReal Worship is another Warren Wiersbe book that applies accurate Bible study to an area that affects most Christians. The author brings up points about the worship experience from two different sides that you can find existing between Protestant-type and Charismatic-type church environments. Wiersbe expounds on bringing balance between the two views of worship. So; this book can minister to Christian adults as well as spiritually-mature teens up to the oldest generation alive.Wiersbe does not limit his study to only music worship. But he certainly explains the different ways that musical worship can be trivialized. He addresses leaders as well as church members on true worship that pleases God and the right attitudes to have during that worship. He also shows that there are spiritual and physical consequences to treating worship as anything other than the highest regard to our Savior. As in Wiersbe's other books; some of which I have read among the numerous he has written; Real Worship encourages readers to pick up the Bible and read it with the many scriptural references made. I have to point this out about his books because there are sadly so many Christian books with the approach of "take my word for it"; "adopt this new terminology for deeper understanding of what's not even written in God's Word"; and "Just trust my revelation that my interpretation is so accurate that it is not to be challenged by anyone unless they want to be labelled as 'rebellious'. Wiersbe doesn't make Word-seeking Christian readers squirm in unsettling doubt. He relies on the Word and secondarily his experience in ministry (which he still evaluates Biblically).I would recommend this book to pastors; worship leaders; choir members; and other church leaders. This book will challenge anyone to replace worship preference and personal interpretation of what God desires in worship with what self-denial before God. I first opened this book with an adamant outlook that my understand of worshiping the LORD was correct. Learning how wrong I was in many areas; as I read this book; I found little room for argument.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
