Joseph P. Free's Archaeology and Bible History; first published in 1950; served well an entire generation of pastors; Sunday school teachers; laypersons; and college students by summarizing the history of the Bible and shedding light on biblical events through archaeological discoveries. The author demonstrated how such data helps us understand the Bible and confirm its historical accuracy. At times he also dealt with issues of biblical interpretation and criticism; always from a historically orthodox position. When the book was withdrawn from circulation in 1976 after the fourteenth printing; many hoped for the day when it would be revised and updated. That task has now been undertaken by one of Dr. Free's former students and a biblical archaeologist in his own right; Dr. Howard Vos. He has brought the archaeological and historical material up to date and has modified earlier archaeological interpretations where necessary. The bibliography has been almost totally replaced.

I did not and was amazed to read about his many rather pragmatic actions that ...By Sabine AtwellThis biography differs in some important aspects from others in as it assesses Reagan's legacy in a much more nuanced and objective way than do the often GOP hagiographies. . The author; a professional historian focused on the ability of Reagan to appeal to various constituencies; the more right wing and religious conservatives in his speeches very often; but a more centrist and pragmatic view when it came to the actions he took. as a President; a dichotomy that his contemporaries did not understand very well. I did not and was amazed to read about his many rather pragmatic actions that often contradicted his hardline speeches. The author documents this very well with speeches and addresses that thePresident gave to various audiences over his long life that put him often; superficially; in the corner with the present GOP. However; his actions were far more considered. and careful. He surrounded himself with a group of people who understood and cared about this country . I; not a friend of Reagan from my limited perspective as a Californian ( we were all galled then by his defunding of UC); gained new insights and a new respect.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A True LeaderBy Fitnesspro22At the time when the American Presidency has sunk to an incredibly low level and Democracy is teetering on the precipice of an abyss; the Reagan legacy remains a beacon of hope that America as we know it will survive. Those of us who witnessed the Glory and Greatness of President Reagan as well as his trials and trepidations; relieved those great times; through the pages of this book with renewed faith in the future of our great country. Alas; the American people Reagan knew are not the same today.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Brands does a very good job of objectively covering the 40th presidentBy keith rainsBrands does a very good job of objectively covering the 40th president. I thought he went in too much detail trying to relate the "October Surprise" to the election victory over Jimmy Carter. He answered my question about the diversion of funds to the Contras. His research and writing led me to confirm my belief that the president's finger prints were not present. However; his management style and policy goals implied that he wouldn't see it; so do what needs to be done to stop the spread of communism in our hemisphere. Brands covers the economic story of the 80s pretty effectively; but do I think more emphasis could have been placed on the work the Democrats did to help the debt grow. They controlled the purse strings and with Tip O'Neil unbending on almost all domestic spending; Reagan had to take what he could. Also; I don't like that Brand implied that Bush's tax increase set the stage for the good growth of the 90s. Evidence is not at all going to verify that. He could equally give credit for cuts in military spending due to the collapse of the USSR. Neither were driving forces. But enough of the criticism. I gave the book four stars. I like the short chapters and the source work. He writes in a very captivating voice. I love the beginning when he analyzes the Goldwater speech. His writing of Reagan's boyhood is inspiring. He is terrific in creating the timeline of Reagan's life and the events going on during it. It is a very scholarly look at a very substantial president. Thank you for nixing the idea that he was an actor reading lines; and for the balance in reminding us of his short comings. I loved his work in comparing Reagan to FDR. Nice job Mr. Brands!
