The author analyzes objectively the various factors which may have caused the changes in Hill's fortunes following his elevation to corps command.

TurnerThis book details two monumental troop movements during the civil war: Longstreet's movement to Chickamauga and the 11th and 12th corps movement to Chattanooga. Clark sifts through all of the "Lost Cause" mentality and provides detailed analysis of wartime railroad management; including the condition and engineering of the rails and roadbeds; along with the use of multiple rail guages and lack of through connections at major cities; especially in the south.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. It's about history; logistics; and effective vs. ineffective management of resources. Many have said that the American Civil War was the first modern war. By this they typically mean weapons and tactics; including use of railroads to transport troops and supplies. Efficient and effective use by the federal government (now an oxymoron) vs. ineffective use of the resource by the Confederacy was a major contributor to the Union's victory. He presents the evidence that had the south not taken a laissez-faire style of governing the war victory could have been theirs. An excellent book for any student of history or management.
