Yorkie Doodle Dandy is Corporal William A. Wynne's story about Smoky; a tiny Yorkshire Terrier found in a New Guinea foxhole during World War II. Smoky helped save the lives of servicemen who were faced with imminent airfield attack. Wynne's own life was spared while under a shipboard kamikaze attack--led by Smoky--Smoky is credited internationally for her therapy work in hospitals and care facilities. Post-war; Smoky continued therapy work and performed on live television with Bill as trainer. Smoky ultimately proved to the world the therapeutic value of dogs to people during war; conflict; and recovery; as well as in friendship; entertainment; and hope. Author William A. Wynne is nationally recognized for his award-winning black and white photography. While specializing in horticulture during high school; he took an elective course in photography; which changed his life forever. In 1944; the 26th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron of the U.S. Army Air Force placed Wynne directly into the Pacific Theater of WWII; where he became Smoky's best friend.

What a beautiful tribute to Nurses of the Korean WarBy Photo nutThe book is beautiful insofar as the notes from the "dirty Marines" and other soldiers are concerned. Brackets are used in [the] sentences entirely too much. Other than the over use of brackets; it's a beautiful tribute from the men who received care in the various hospital ships to the ladies in their "crisp white uniforms" who were like Angels to the men they cared for. When you really take in what is written about the nurses: sleeping two hours per night on a regular basis and using their own blood for transfusions to the point of anemia in order to keep these young men alive; you will have a brand new respect for those who served in the most forgotten war America fought last century.7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. The Forgotten HeroesBy William EvansA book such as Quiet Heroes is long overdue. It pays tribute to an easily forgotten group of quiet heroes; Navy Nurses; that quietly continue; even to this day; to provide dedicated care and comfort to our war casualties. Books are constantly written of the combat heroes; combat commanders; pilots; medal winners and even all their support personnel...until you come to the one class of heroe no one remembers; the Navy Nurse. By Ms. Omori focusing on the Navy Nurses of the Korean War (1950-1953) she captures an era on the brink of passing into our memories without tribute or recognition. Wonderfully supplemented with actual photographs and interviews of the quiet heroes themselves; the book pays that tribute long overdue. A must read for anyone interested in our nation's history and the agony suffered during the Korean Conflict.
