A Great Read!By jab40Everyone who studies the War for Southern Independence should read this book. The war and the aftermath of it left an imprint on a nation that torn from four long years of war. The sheer destruction on the men who fought and the families who lost loved ones shook the very foundations of every aspect of faith and life. Nothing would ever be the same. Not only the war years but the suffering during the years of reconstruction as a nation tried to heal itself from a brutal war that only destroyed lives but the very land itself; in which entire cities and towns where destroyed. In that time they had no understanding of psychology and mental disorders such as depression ; bi-polar ; shell shock ( PSTD); ect. The medical field was still in a primitive state; which is proven by the fact of how many soldiers died from diseases during the war. So it is also a fact that psychology was in a state of infancy during and following the war. A soldier who was suffering from depression and homesickness was treated with scorn and branded a coward. Which in a time when honor was a very important attribute and to branded a coward was worse than death because it affect every single aspect of life. I was so glad to find this book about a subject that is over looked. To truly understand the civil war we must go beyond the battles and study the men who fought. We must look at what drove them to fight; how the war effected them not only in the period of war but how it effected their lives and their families long after the gun went silent. We must not study them with a modern mindset; we must understand the time in which they lived. Their world views and their sense morality was not the same as ours;etc... So with all that said I am glad that this author choose to write a book on this topic; I can not imagine the time and affort he put into this book and would like to say thanks.
