Addresses issues relating to the gender; ethnic and cultural factors through which enslaved Africans and their descendents interpreted their lives under slavery; thereby creating communities with a shared sense of identity. The focus of the book is on the ways in which identities were formulated under slavery and the ways in which the struggle to escape slavery and its legacy continued to affect the lives of descendents of slaves. The introductory essay explores an approach to the study of the African diaspora that looks outward from Africa and places the following chapters; written by leading aurthorities from Europe and North and South America; in the context of the theoretical literature.

MoffettA solid 4 star rating for me. What sets this book apart from others is that this real-life story reads like a novel and draws the reader in with its well written and descriptive narratives. The story is not a complete history of the 1st Air Commandos; but is more specific to the March 5/6 1944 glider assault of "Operation Thursday" which does take the reader about 3/4 of the book to get there. Where this book truly excels is in all of its background and biographical material on the key personnel who molded the commando group into a cohesive; functional; and specialized unit; Brig. Gen. Orde Wingate; Col. Philip Cochran; Col. John Alison; and the men they selected to head the organizational sections within the commando group. The writer takes the reader through the groups inception; development; training; overseas movement; and operational employment of the commando force. First person experiences from veterans who were with the group are weaved within the story. The saga of the group winds down following "Operation Thursday" with the tragic death of Gen. Wingate at the end of March; the recall of Col. Alison to the states in early April; and Cochran in May. The book does not get too bogged down in technical details about gliders or aircraft; but offers enough so you fully understand each. The story flows and I didn't find it balky to read as some are when they bounce around trying to cover every detail. The hardcover book is 300 pages; has 23 chapters with footnotes; 24 pages of BW pictures placed in the middle of the book; and a well put together listing of supporting references the author drew upon in creating his publication. Rich History of those who have gone before usBy Carl Pohrte; JrAs a EX-USAF COMBAT CONTROLLER - which is now part of the USAF Tactical or Special Operations which include the Air Commando headquartered at Hurlburt Field; FL this book is part of our history. Unlike many books on war the history is fully explained as well as the characters. As a history buff and proud member of this elite organization I can relate to this story. Very good read about the group that still performs their assignments without fanfare encouraged by the quiet pride of serving their country. These units are still overcoming many many obstacles. We recently were present at a ceremony honoring the history of these units and the current unit that carry on - for those interested after reading this book look up the USAF Special Operations Command0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
