PDF Power Lines: Phoenix and the Making of the Modern Southwest (Politics and Society in Modern America) by Andrew Needham in History

Description

The Coast Guard does a lot more than just guard the coast: it goes all over the world saving lives; fighting smugglers; and being really; really awesome. Like did you know the Coast Guard drove the landing craft on D-Day? Or that it helped the Wright Brothers fly? Did you know that it helped create the Navy SEALs and flew B-17s? This book is a collection of 25 of the strangest; most obscure; and most AWESOME facts from the history of the military branch no one remembers. Complete with 88 pages of cartoons; diagrams; and ways to make fun of the Navy.

Do you want to know what fueled the Arizona "growth machine"? Then Power Lines is a must read. It's a compelling look into how centralized coal power and southwestern sprawl fed off of one another to radically alter the landscape and economies of the American West.3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Getting more electricity was key and the eventual solution was coal-fired plants on Native American land. The story is telling; but the level of detail is often overwhelming. And the story curiously leaves out almost entirely the role of the state of Arizona in the city's spectacular growth.3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Exhaustive HistoryBy Dave GalanisThe book tells a comprehensive - and exhaustive - history of bringing power to the Southwest to fuel the incredible growth during the last hundred years. In some sections the book is too comprehensive and it losses the narrative that would make it a more interesting read. The author probably could have used a more forceful editor.
