Jais-mickThe first of its kind - not only shows the portraits of Frederick Douglass; one of the most photographed men of his era; but also explains the context of the photos; how they influenced caricatures; cartoons and modern murals. The inclusion of Douglass's three exxays on photography are particularly welcome.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Anyone who is interested in Douglass or this era must have this book in their library.By Lauren AndersonThis is a must read for anyone who has an interest in Douglass or this era of our history. I gave it as a Christmas present to my 88 year old mother who adores Douglass; although not related by blood his family our ours were close. I has brought her immense joy. It provides a refreshingly new perspective on Douglass in a book that is both beautiful and readable. It is a book that you can easily read out of sequence by merely opening to an interesting photograph and reading the accompanying text. As someone who has limited time to read; I appreciate being able to glean fascinating information whenever I open the book even if I only read it for a short time. It is simply the most amazing book I have read in a very long time.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting Read and Coffee Table Book!By D4mitchBought three and gave two away as gifts. Interesting reading for me as photography is one of my key hobbies. I would have never guessed that Douglass was the most photographed American of the Nineteenth Century. I was also not aware of his high interest in the field of photography.
