The reader is not only brought back to life in the 1600's; but is educated along the way. Interesting facts are presented based upon either the diary's entries; Mehetabel's correspondence to friends and family or actual court documents. Instead of feeling like you are reading mundane material which often can occur with historical texts; the author provides additional insights as to what is happening with the characters both outwardly and inwardly making the story that much more personal and real. Coughlin has done a wonderful service to Mehetabel Chandler Coit by giving her a voice!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Mehetabel Chandler was my first cousin 8 times removed. ...By C.Mehetabel Chandler was my first cousin 8 times removed. reading Caughlin's book on Mehetabel's brief recordings of her life and times makes that period in US history more alive for me. I had direct line ancestors in the French and Indian wars and on Long Island as farmers and tavern keepers. Stories of the Long island American spy ring persisted in our family to this day. but that is another book. In 1704 most of my direct Jones line was lost in an French Canadian Indian raid in Connecticut. So this book helped under stand some of that history too.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A look at a time gone byBy L. MilletteHistory has not been a favorite topic for me to read; but I am thoroughly learning and enjoying this book. It truly has a place in our history. I am so impressed with the historical information that the author has knowledge of and the hours it must have taken to put this story/document together.I recommend it to anyone and any group that is interested in having a look into the past through the diary of a female living through the time of the Puritans and the historical details and perspective of that time shared by the author.
