PDF On the Edge of Freedom: The Fugitive Slave Issue in South Central Pennsylvania; 1820-1870 (The North's Civil War) by David G. Smith in History

Description

Since its publication in 1993; From a Native Daughter; a provocative; well-reasoned attack against the rampant abuse of Native Hawaiian rights; institutional racism; and gender discrimination; has generated heated debates in Hawai'i and throughout the world. This 1999 revised work includes material that builds on issues and concerns raised in the first edition: Native Hawaiian student organizing at the University of Hawai'i; the master plan of the Native Hawaiian self-governing organization Ka Lahui Hawai'i and its platform on the four political arenas of sovereignty; the 1989 Hawai'i declaration of the Hawai'i ecumenical coalition on tourism; and a typology on racism and imperialism. Brief introductions to each of the previously published essays brings them up to date and situates them in the current Native Hawaiian rights discussion.

Wide-ranging; interesting account of the struggle against slavery in a key Northern border regionBy CustomerLet me just say that I am a member of the author's family...that said; I found this book to be a wide-ranging and thorough account of how a crucial border region dealt with the slavery issue before; during; and to some extent; after; the Civil War. Readers will find particular detail on the period from the 1840s to the end of the Civil War. This includes great detail on the Gettysburg campaign; when this region was the site of hostilities (and the site of at least some "slave catching" raids by members of the Confederate Army). The political choices and actions of the extremely important figure of Thaddeus Stevens (who was featured prominently in the movie "Lincoln") are also described in detail. In short; I think that this is a book that many readers interested in the Civil War; Northern History; slavery; border states; and race relations ( as well as those interested in the stories of individual courage by common citizens opposed to slavery) will find very valuable and intriguing.
