ebooks On Wave and Wing: The 100 Year Quest to Perfect the Aircraft Carrier by Barrett Tillman in History

Description

Confederate veterans flocked to the Montana Territory at the end of the Civil War. Seeking new opportunities after enduring the hardships of war; these men and their families made a lasting impact on the region. Their presence was marked across the territory in places like Confederate Gulch and Virginia City. Now meet the fascinating characters who came to Big Sky country after the war; including guerrillas who fought with William Quantrill and Bloody Bill Anderson; as well as cavalrymen who rode with Confederate legends General Nathan Bedford Forrest and Colonel John S. Mosby. Author and historian Ken Robison recounts where these soldiers came from; why they fought for the South; what drew them to the Montana Territory and how they helped shape the region.

The maestro does it again!By John MitchellIf you are at all interested in aircraft carriers; naval aviation and the carrier battles of WWII this book is a must read (and if not you should be!). As in all his books; Barrett Tillman details a fascinating subject including developments by the US and foreign navies; first person anecdotes that bring the story to life and an excellent overview of carriers coming to age during WWII.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Tillman Does it (Yet) Again!By Dick HallionAt first glance; it might seem that naval aviation has been covered so extensively and by so many outstanding historians that it is hard to justify yet another book on the evolution of the aircraft carrier. That is; until one reads Barrett Tillman's latest book; On Wave and Wing. Having first made his name nearly a half-century ago with what is still the definitive history of the Douglas SBD Dauntless; Tillman has produced a succession of outstanding works on various aspects of naval aviation; naval aircraft; specific wars and campaigns; and military affairs. This book shows that he has not lost his touch for blending first-rate research; keen insight; and clear; accessible prose to produce a book that is both definitive and fascinating. In a year of exceptional naval aviation studies--VAdm Robert Dunn's Gear Up; Mishaps Down; and Robert "Boom" Powell's Wave-Off! come immediately to mind--Barrett Tillman has produced a standout work; one belonging in the collections of anyone interested in the development of the carrier; its role in war; and its place in America's national security strategy. Bravo Zulu!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Valuable historical account; not flawlessBy electricamermanInteresting. Lots of behind scenes/anecdotal stories. Good illustrations. Detailed history of evolution of carriers; carrier aircraft; and flying off/landing technique. Interesting accounts of carrier battles of W.W.II. Good profiles of naval airmen; carrier commanders; flightcrew. IN MY OPINION; only drawback was the nationalist/pro-war bias woven into the historical exposition. Depending on reader's orientation; this slant may make a reader like or dislike this book. What do you expect? it's a book about war and killing. Now; if reader OVERLOOKS the right-slanted viewpoint of the author; book IS FILLED with valuable; fascinating historical accounts.
