Description

At thirteen; Danya Ruttenberg decided she was an atheist. As a young adult; she immersed herself in the rhinestone-bedazzled wonderland of late 1990s San Francisco-drinking smuggled absinthe with wealthy geeks and plotting the revolution with feminist zinemakers. But she found herself yearning for something she would eventually call God.Surprised by God is a memoir of a young woman's spiritual awakening and eventual path to the rabbinate; a story of integrating life on the edge of the twenty-first century into the discipline of traditional Judaism; without sacrificing either. It's also an unflinchingly honest guide to the kind of work that goes into developing a spiritual practice-and it shows why; perhaps; doing this in today's world requires more effort than ever.

This is old-style history; who did what; not ...By Northern WandererThis is old-style history; who did what; not the economics or grand strategy behind events; although geopolitics very much shaped what happened on the frontier. This book is probably of most interest to Revolutionary War buffs or residents of western Pennsylvania; but it covers a part of the Revolution we rarely think about. While Washington; Green and other generals fought full scale battles in the east; along the frontier things were difficult. Many households were missing men who were off fighting. Indian war-fighting technology was basically the same as that of the settlers; muzzle loaders; axes and knives. The Indians had an advantage in their raids as they could choose their time and place against scattered farms. Frontier folks could only retaliate after the fact or by sending expeditions to annihilate Indian villages. Roads were marginal; making it difficult to send in or sustain large numbers of regular troops and several such retaliatory efforts came to grief. Atrocities were committed by both sides and women and children were frequently kidnapped or killed. While it is now politically correct to view Native Americans as victims; it may do them more honor to acknowledge that; when the technology was equal; the contest for control of the west was not a sure thing. Basically they held their own until first the French; then the British abandoned them.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Four StarsBy LKESGlad to get this book reprinted.
