Norway To America: A History of the Migration

DOC Norway To America: A History of the Migration by Ingrid Semmingsen in History

Description

A vivid account of the implementation of the Brown decision in the South by southern federal judges committed to the rule of law. Bass's unlikely heroes are the federal judges-primarily those on the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals-who vigorously and skillfully implemented Brown v. Board of Education in six southern states. The rich profiles show the character of the men who gave up prosperous lives; popularity; and friends to see that the constitutional rights of all citizens were protected.

Very InformativeBy Anita L.The author provides valuable information on the migration of Norwegians to America from a Norwegian perspective; but also helps fill in historical gaps for Americans. Details of the settlement of the midwest are covered in this book; which help explain the attitudes and philosophy of the people in the area today. In a very matter-of-fact way; the author presents the considerable Norwegian contributions to the development of the frontier - why they came; where they came from and how they adapted to their new environment. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in understanding regional differences in America as well as their Norwegian roots.24 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Very readable historyBy CultureVultureI read this very quickly; yet thoroughly. The book tied together many bits of information I'd uncovered over years of doing genealogical research. I appreciated specific accounts of life aboard ship; travel routes and early settlements. Good descriptions of interrelationships among immigrants made a lasting impression. It also gave me new directions to pursue in my research. This is worth reading even if one doesn't have Norwegian ancestors because many of their hardships apply to all newcomers to America.7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. NorskeBy torquaypamThis book had just what I was looking for. Genealogy is not as easy as one might think; but with this information my written segments are now much clearer to my children and their children.I would recommend the reading to anyone researching for the history of Norwegian immigrants.
