DOC News Dispatches from the Korean War: A U.S. Army Combat Correspondent Writes for Stars and Stripes About the 3rd Division by Ray Schumack in History

Description

In the present upheaval in the Islamic world; as chaos; war; and vengeance are overtaking order; security; and civil rights; Muslim radicals have been venting their frustrations among their minorities; most of whom are Christian: from ancient Chaldeans in Iraq to Orthodox denominations in Turkey; from Catholics in Indonesia and Malaysia to remote and isolated Christian communities in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Related to this vast and escalating phenomenon has been the violent activity of some within the Muslim minorities in the West; who have migrated there in the past few decades and now seek revenge against their former colonial masters. This is taking place in the context of fast-increasing numbers of Muslims in the West; the result both of high birthrates and of escalating legal and illegal immigration from Islamic lands.

A Great ReadBy Sandy BernsteinRay Schumack's telling of the Korean War was enlightening; especially for someone who has only read about it in school or viewed it on TV's M.A.S.H. series. Loved the show and in some ways Ray's vivid scenes reminded me of the humor and horror depicted in the show. War is bloody and war is hell; but the author did not focus on bloody battle scenes or unspeakable horrors he no doubt experienced. Instead he told it from the perspective of a soldier assigned to write about it and capture everyday life as he saw it - sometimes grim and sometimes humorous. This is a great read for anyone interested in the war and learning about it from someone who lived through it.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This book puts you there.By Fred HenryMy father was in the US Air Force during the Korean 'Conflict' and I was born shortly after the fighting ended there. I had many uncles who fought in World War II and Korea as well and I grew up listening to countless stories of those years. In his new book; "News Dispatches From the Korean War" Ray Schumack brings back all those memories for me; a forgotten time most people only know of through episodes of M*A*S*H. Schumack puts the taste; feel; and texture of the action right on the page and the reader sees through a clear lens what it was like as an American soldier in Korea in the early 1950's. Korea was; perhaps; the last American war fought in the 20th Century that employed tactics used in WWI and WWII and this book truly captures that. What is most amazing to me is how someone can write about tbose experiences all these years later with such a sharp memory of detail. That Schumack wrote for Stars Stripes while in Korea is certainly an asset but his talent for the written word all these years later is truly a gift. For anyone who remembers those years or anyone who wishes to know what it was like I strongly recommend this book.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great short bookBy Timothy J HallI had the pleasure of randomly meeting Mr Schumack on a park bench in Sarasota' s St. Armands Circle on 12/29/14. Completely by chance a random comment I made to him about everything being better with bacon led him to telling me a story he had written in his book. I'm a Marine Corps veteran who served in Korea multiple times thirty years after Mr Schumack did. I found him to be absolutely fascinating and we talked for more than thirty minutes about his book. I enjoyed his short book a great deal and actually meeting him made it much more meaningful to me.
