5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. 50 excellent stories of Union Battle Flags and Color-Bearers at GettysburgBy Joe OwenMichael Dreese has written the excellent short stories about the heroic flag bearers of the Army of The Potomac and their conduct during the Battle of Gettysburg from July 1st to 3rd; 1863. These men had a tremendous sense of duty and honor and bravely carried their regimental flags at the front of their regiments in some very deadly and chaotic fighting against the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. These men from Delaware to Michigan; New York to Wisconsin often were killed in the fighting; seriously wounded; or in a few instances escaped unharmed. These flag-bearers had brave color guards to keep the flags and the flag-bearers safe in the thick of the battle. In many cases; the color guards were all killed protecting the flag. These men often performed "super-human" deeds to keep their flags from being captured by the enemy.These flag-bearers were chosen mostly for their excellent "military bearing and bravery" that was proven in other battles before Gettysburg. Some were chosen to be flag-bearers during the battle when these soldiers picked up the colors from the fallen and continued to carry the colors at the front of the regiment. Flag-bearers were an extremely important part of the regiment. Soldiers of the regiment would often be guided by the direction of the flags; and the flag-bearers kept the regiments in line; or when the flag-bearers started to charge; so did the rest of the regiment.This book is a companion to Dreese's other book; "This Flag Never Goes Down!"-40 stories of Confederate Battle Flags and Color-Bearers at Gettysburg. Both books highlight the bravery of the flag-bearers who faced each other in combat. Both Union and Confederate Flag-Bearers had many characteristics in common; a brave sense of duty; excellent military conduct; a selfless devotion to duty; and a tenacity of courage in the heat of the battle. I am an academic law library director and teach and have published law review article on issues surrounding free speech. I am appalled that a business such as ; upon which I have relied to get obscure titles both for myself and for the law library would pull Mr. Dreese's book on the Confederate flag. While not a state actor; given 's practice of making even the most obscure titles available and given its market size; this can bee seen a little less than censorship. This one tells of the Union flag bearers. ; however; has chosen to pull the counterpart which tells the stories of the Confederate flag bearers. This is insanity!; stop with your insane censorship!
