The information provided is absolutely GREAT. But it is so jumpy back and forth in time and so incomplete on the final ending and liberation that I was left without knowing the outcome and condition at the end. I'm a student of the Holocaust and have had a chance to talk at length with a number of survivors and what happened to them as the Nazi troops hurried to hide their work and disposed of the survivors; If I were to give it a new title I'd be inclined to say 1933 to 1944.BUT; having said that; this is filled with the human stories and the facts of the things that happened; It is WELL WORTH READING; BUT NOT AS THE ONLY SOURCE.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. "Those who don't remember history are condemned to repeat it."By RisingWolfNot just another WWII history text. This book is one the most important documentaries about the ultimate human depravity called naziism and how they committed unspeakable horrors against a defenseless prey. I used to think of the Holocaust as evidenced by the camps and the ovens but I am now aware of the atrocities the helpless Jews of Europe suffered before being loaded on the trains and delivered to the killing camps.I knew there had been mass executions but I didn't have a clue as to the hundreds of thousands murdered enmass before they even left their villages and towns. The nazis were devious; deceitful; inhuman brutes who are still with us.This is a wake up call! 1930's/40's Europe didn't think a gang of goose stepping criminals and thugs who seemed comedic and irrelevant were worth worrying about and could be managed. The events and human tragedy related here attest to the opposite. READ IT!!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. HarrowingBy Douglas A. HaffThis was one of the most difficult books I have read. I could only read a chapter or so at at time. It was so depressing. No one comes out well. While Germany bears the largest responsibility no one is innocent. The occupied areas often enthusiastically cooperated with the killings especially in east Europe. The western countries refused refuge even after it became clear that the killings were happening. The organized religions come out no better although any resistance to the regime was usually based on religious faith. The only lack is the understanding that once a totalitarian state is established it is almost impossible to overthrow. The group that totally disgraced itself was the military. Only they had the power to act and with a few exceptions soiled their honor. This book should be required reading for all college students.
