My Tibet; Text by his Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama of Tibet

audiobook My Tibet; Text by his Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama of Tibet by Dalai Lama in History

Description

The tangled connections that have bound Jews to African Americans in popular culture and liberal politics are at the heart of Michael Rogin's arresting and unnerving book. Looking at films from Birth of a Nation to Forrest Gump; Rogin explores blackface in Hollywood films as an aperture to broader issues: the nature of "white" identity in America; the role of race in transforming immigrants into "Americans;" the common experiences of Jews and African Americans that made Jews key supporters in the fight for racial equality; and the social importance of popular culture. Rogin's forcefully argued study challenges us to confront the harsh truths behind the popularity of racial masquerade.

MelamedIf I were forced to pick one book on Tibet to recommend; this is the one I would choose out of all the Tibetan books I have loved! Published in 1989; the year the Dalai Lama received the Nobel Peace Prize; the book begins with the Nobel Peace Prize citation. Throughout the real Tibet is envisioned with pictures of Tibetans portraying all aspects of their daily life. There are also pictures of fabulous mountain scenes as well as close ups of animals and plant life. A sampling of Tibetan art work; statues and holy places are included. Every picture portrays a personal intimate loving caring for Tibet and it's people. The book also contains a series of commentaries by the Dalai Lama. Essays include: Compassion; World Peace and Happiness; Ecology and the Human Heart; Universal Responsibility and the Heart; Tibet As I Knew It; My Life In Lhasa; and The Meaning of Pilgrimage. These essays were a result of a lengthy sharing of Galen Lowell"s pictures with the Dalai Lama which were transcribed. I am highly impressed with the Dalai Lama's vision for his country in 1989. His envisioning has changed somewhat recently yet the original proposal of the Dalai Lama presented to the world for Tibet that; although totally rejected by the Chinese; is a beacon light for what Tibet could become. Also the essays present a passionate view of compassion. details of the Dalai Lama's early childhood remembrances; and a strong emphasis on responsible environmental stewardship. I also now understand much more deeply what pilgrimage means to practitioners. This volume is a veritable celebration of pre-Chinese Tibet. The book rates the highest five star gem imaginable--even a sixth star! A obligatory enjoy for Tibetan lovers.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
