Pretty in-depth biographies of the major (and minor) figures in mountaineering. I am endlessly fascinated with this book; which provides me with something interesting every time I pick it up. What a pleasure to read (though it's really more of a browsing kind of book) a book that; instead of simplifying or dumbing down its topic; treats it with real sophistication. Whoever put this book together really knew what s/he was doing.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good Coffee Table BookBy David LipkeThis book is full of absolutely beautiful and stunning hi-res photographs I love to flip back to over and over. It gave me a good background on the history of climbing I would otherwise never have known (particularly anything pre-1950).At the end of the day though; I dislike how most of said pictures are chopped and distorted by where the binding is. More than a few lose something around an inch there; and the publishers opted not to try and doctor the picture that the binding wouldn't ruin parts of it. Also there's a lot of detail left out on exciting climbers/adventures had in more recent years. A previous reviewer was upset by his lack of George Lowe. After reading his comments I too am saddened by this omission. I understand that not everyone can be included and some time on google satiates that desire. I think if you're a fan of coffee-table books; big pictures; and good research; you won't be wrong to pick this up. If you're a climber and want some reference lying around you'll be happy to pick it up. However; if you know your history and spend too much time on a wall to flip through books you'll be happy you didn't.
