Morning to Midnight in the Saddle: Civil War Letters of a Soldier in Wilder's Lightning Brigade

PDF Morning to Midnight in the Saddle: Civil War Letters of a Soldier in Wilder's Lightning Brigade by McManus; Inglis; Editors in History

Description

By the late 1810s; a global revolution in cotton had remade the U.S.-Mexico border; bringing wealth and waves of Americans to the Gulf Coast while also devastating the lives and villages of Mexicans in Texas. In response; Mexico threw open its northern territories to American farmers in hopes that cotton could bring prosperity to the region. Thousands of Anglo-Americans poured into Texas; but their insistence that slavery accompany them sparked pitched battles across Mexico. An extraordinary alliance of Anglos and Mexicans in Texas came together to defend slavery against abolitionists in the Mexican government; beginning a series of fights that culminated in the Texas Revolution. In the aftermath; Anglo-Americans rebuilt the Texas borderlands into the most unlikely creation: the first fully committed slaveholders' republic in North America. Seeds of Empire tells the remarkable story of how the cotton revolution of the early nineteenth century transformed northeastern Mexico into the western edge of the United States; and how the rise and spectacular collapse of the Republic of Texas as a nation built on cotton and slavery proved to be a blueprint for the Confederacy of the 1860s.

Really good bookBy RonJI bought this book because my gr grandfather was in the 123rd ILL; and I am always looking for more information about what he endured during the war. Unlike letters from many soldiers; the letters give fairly detailed information about what went on day-to-day as well as battles fought; who was wounded or killed; etc. The book also contains excellent additional material putting the letters in context with what was going on at the time. I probably will buy the hard cover edition; because I will want to flip through certain sections again. If someone has a specific interest in Wilder's Lightning Brigade; also look at histories of other regiments in the brigade; particularly the 72nd Indiana.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Soldier's interesting account of service in Wilder's BrigadeBy Marsha G.My great great grandfather served in an Illinois regiment in Wilder's Brigade; so I am always on the lookout for accounts from Wilder's troops as to the events and conditions they experienced . This book is invaluable in describing the exploits of the well known "Lightning Brigade" of mounted infantry from a soldier's perspective. Would recommend MORNING TO MIDNIGHT IN THE SADDLE especially to those who are particularly interested in Civil War history from a participant's viewpoint--such as letters; diaries; written reports; and so forth. .0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Just Like FriendsBy CherylI feel like I got to know Otho McManus as a person who became my friend. I was pulling for him to make it through the Civil War; even though I learned his fate early on in this book. The editors do a great job of putting Otho's letters to his wife and daughter in perspective with events of the Civil War and on the home front. Because I live in the region where many of the soldiers of the 123rd Illinois Infantry were from; I really enjoyed getting to know of the heroic deeds and of the drudgery of camp life of these soldiers. As the rating indicates; I loved the book.
