Interpreting Ramakrishna: Kali's Child Revisited is a scholarly rebuttal to the controversial book Kali's Child; by Jeffrey Kripal; which asserted that Sri Ramakrishna's mystical experiences were fueled by homoerotic desires that he neither accepted nor understood. A glaring weakness of Kripal is that he could barely read and understand Bengali; the language of the source material. Furthermore; he unfortunately was too eager to prove conclusions that the literature did not support. These and other points are explained step-by-step by Swami Tyagananda and Pravrajiks Vrajaprana; the authors of the present title.Included in Interpreting Ramakrishna is a lengthy analysis of scholarship on Sri Ramakrishna over the past century.According to Harvard professor Francis X. Clooney: "Interpreting Ramakrishna is a substantial and conscientious work of scholarly and religious reflection; the best resource we have for understanding Sri Ramakrishna today." Professor Gerald James Larson (UC Santa Barbara) says that Interpreting Ramakrishna "is balanced; scrupulously fair; and generous to all sides in the debate."According to Professor Anantanand Rambachan; Interpreting Ramakrishna "is a patient and elaborate illustration of the possible This is a welcome contribution to Ramakrishna that treads the uncommon middle ground between the extremes of the uncritical insider and the unexamined assumptions of the scholar."

Wonderfully Written just not accurateBy AbesopureThis book is wonderfully written; the author who was born a jew and latter converted to islam was a masterful writer and explained the atmosphere; culture; and prideful personality of the nomadic beadowins beautifully. Essad Bey (his pen name) pulls together the series of unlikely events that happened in a timely fashion in order for gods final message to reach the people of earth. In my opinion he touches on something that is often overlooked that the Prophet Mohamed (peace be upon him) often eluded too which is that he was not bringing a new religion to the world but reviving it. He saw Judaism; Christianity and Islam as one and the same and he like moses and jesus was just a messenger of god and a mere man. He also explains the Prophet Mohamed's determination; wisdom; and eternal love for all people wonderfully as well. The only reason I give it a 3/5 is because there are some discrepancies in the book that are exaggerated or deviate from the Quran certain events that have said to happen in tis book are not necessarily true and the depiction of the prophet is skewed . either way if you are an open minded individual who enjoys learning about religion this book is for you.3 of 8 people found the following review helpful.
