A primer on militant IslamBy Michael T KennedyThe book is a collection of essays and some are a bit dated and a few are repetitive so I subtract one star but the subject is very important. Pipes is an expert; like Bernard Lewis; and he makes several critical points. The attraction of violence in Islam is not a consequence of poverty and oppression. The hijackers were middle class and well educated. Pipes makes the point that many militants have graduate degrees and come from privileged backgrounds. A common thread seems to be youth and a tendency to resent the contrast between the West with its prosperity and the backwardness of Islamic society. Many militants are engineers. The computer science professor being tried in south Florida comes to mind. South Florida; along with Trenton; NJ; seem to be favorite locales for these people. They are not particularly devout Muslims according to reports and Pipes believes they have adopted the latest version of a utopian ideology; like Marxism and Fascism earlier in the 20th century. The chapter on "economics" is particularly worthwhile. The ignorance of economic principles and human behavior has made Iran into a failing society; propped up by oil.His chapter on "sleepers"; agents who are living quiet lives; waiting to be called to jihad; is another highlight and gives perspective on the current controversy about NSA surveillance. This book is a primer for those who have not read extensively on Islamic extremism. The hostile reviews posted here support his concerns about Political Correctness blocking better understanding of the risks. The news media avoid anything that offends Muslims and the militant organizations like CAIR. The result is an information blackout. Pipes provides an important first step in understanding the problem.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Three StarsBy Anthony E. KingA must read!!!
