Hanson covers the topic in a very objective manner given he grew up in the heart of the California Central Valley as a grower who has scene first hand the real costs of massive Illegal Immigration.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. book does not go far enoughBy Bruce KenyonThe author explains the social changes of the Southern California population well;but smooths over the real issues; like who is getting a "free ride" off of native born Americans;while holding onto racial overtones directed at those very people paying for all theentitlements the Mexicans enjoy. It seems to me that Victor Hanson expresses that we should feel sorry for those whocrossed or southern border; because of their hopeless existence; but he fails toexpound the other half of the story; that is; that one race has been given special treatment by governmentat the expense of every other race; and this is causing hostility in America.I give it 4 stars because of its complacency; the Author needs to express indignation!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Insightful Analysis of Immigration into CaliforniaBy TGWWhile Professor Hanson is an academic at Cal State - Fresno; his family has owned and worked agricultural land south of Fresno for a century or more. And in addition to his academic duties (where he taught a significant number of Hispanic students); he still lives on the family farm and works the land. He went to public schools with Mexican classmates; lives in a small town where whites are in the minority; and through inter-marriage has an extended family that now includes a fair number of Hispanic relatives. In short; Hanson has firsthand knowledge of how Mexican immigration has changed California over the past 50-plus years. While largely based upon his personal observations; Professor Hanson's insights will help the reader understand the immigration issues currently facing California and the Southwest.
