Lee's Chief of Artillery and also Lee's Chaplain/friend. Although I purchased this book to learn more about Gen. Pendleton and his relationship with Lee; I was pleasantly surprised as the amount of background material his daughter; the author; presents not only of the war; but of the conditions of life in that period of time.Much of the information presented in this book comes from Gen. Pendleton's letters that his daughter had collected. Her personal views of the war and it's causes reflect the attitudes of a southern women of that time that are most revealing. I found myself leaning more about the war and the aura of the times than I would have expected. History books don't usually present this kind of background information.I recommend this book to anyone interested in the Civil War from a personal southern perspective.
