Mary's World: Love; War; and Family Ties in Nineteenth-century Charleston

ePub Mary's World: Love; War; and Family Ties in Nineteenth-century Charleston by Richard N. Cote in History

Description

Ukraine is in the midst of the worst international crisis in East-West relations since the Cold War; and history itself has become a battleground in Russia-Ukraine relations. Can history and historical narratives be blamed for what has happened in the region; or can they show the path to peace and reconciliation; helping to integrate the history of the region in the broader European context? The essays collected here address these questions; rethinking the meaning of Ukrainian history by venturing outside boundaries established by the national paradigm; and demonstrating how research on the history of Ukraine can benefit from both regional and global perspectives. The Future of the Past shows how the study of Ukraine’s past enhances our understanding of Europe; Eurasia; and the world―past; present; and future.

Fantastic work!By PatriziaI have been fortunate to spend a great deal of time in Charleston over the years and I have of course passed the Miles Brewton house It's a little hard to miss with that fence!) I never gave it a great deal of thought until I stumbled on this book on my last visit to the area. I almost didn't buy it because I had thought it was a book regarding Mary Chestnut whose diaries I do have; but my husband told me to take another look. I am glad I did.The book is chockful of history but it reads like a novel. A book for the layman and historian alike it is a book you won't be able to put down. The only thing I would have liked to see is a diagram of a family tree. Cote does an excellent job of describing the members but with so many similar names it is sometimes hard to keep the straight; a tree would have helped. What a fantastic book; a MUST read for anyone who loves history or novels; you can't put it down the sad thing is when it ends you feel like you have said goodbye to friends. These people will stay in your head long after you finish1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating so far!By fabgirlThis is proving to be a good read! I've just finished the first chapter; and I'm hooked! Full of interesting people; places and customs. If the rest of the book is as interesting as the first chapter; then this book will be on my list of favorite books.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. My Pringle Family.By John F. PittsMary is a relative of my Pringle family on my mother's side. I enjoyed the book even more for that reason. My gggg grandfather was Judge Robert Pringle; William Bull Pringle's grandfather.
