Zen's Chinese Heritage traces twenty-five generations of inlightened Buddhist teachers; supplementing their core teachings with history; biography; and poetry. The result is an intimate and profound human portrait of the enlightened Zen ancients; and an unprecedented look into the depths of the rich cultural heritage. In this new edition with even more valuable material; Ferguson surveys generations of Zen masters; moving chronologically through successive generations of ancestral teachers; supplementing their core teachings with history; biography; and starkly beautiful poetry. In addition to giving the reader the engaging sense of the "family history" of Zen; this uniquely valuable book paints a clear picture of the tradition's evolution as a religious; literary; and historical force.

Solid look at the "English Pompeii"By Daryl CarpenterConsidering the relative dearth of information available on the Georgian era Royal Navy; I was surprised that Haynes would choose the "Mary Rose" for the subject of a "Workshop Manual." Despite my initial trepidation; this book provides a surprisingly solid study of the construction; arrangement; and operation of the ship; along with the recovery and preservation of the wreck. It isn't quite as technically detailed as some Haynes titles (you won't learn how to field strip a capstan); but the text does go into some detail about hull structure; the duties of the crew; some of the techniques used in sailing the ship; and 16th century battle tactics. The remarkable salvage and preservation of the wreck also occupies a sizable portion of this book.Visually; this book is exceptionally good. The text is accompanied by a large number of photographs; paintings; and period illustrations; many of them in color. There are several dozen diagrams and sketches; depicting the ship's structure; recovered artifacts; how the ship was raised and righted; and even reconstructions of several crew member's faces based on skeletal evidence. There's also quite a few photographs of the wreck in it's preserved state; and of artifacts ranging from the skeleton of the ship's dog; to a compass; a surgeon's cap; and a calfskin book cover.I'm mostly pleased with this manual; although it doesn't really fit into the established "Haynes manual" format. It's a visually appealing and informative book; and does an excellent job presenting the efforts of the Mary Rose Trust since 1979. It largely lacks the detailed "how it works" asides that are big draw for people like me; and which make the manuals on the HMS Victory and the submarine Alliance two of my favorites in the series. I'd also wait for the price to go down a bit; I'd probably rate this three stars if I'd paid the full $36.95 is currently asking. Although the Mary Rose Trust has published a five-volume series on the ship (expect to pay a few hundred dollars for the entire set); this should make a nice budget-conscious alternative.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Ever wonder about sailing a Man-O-War in the 1600's?By Mr. T.Ever wonder about sailing a Man-O-War in the 1600's? This is the most incredible; interesting and down right fascinating book I have ever read. The authors deserve some sort of history prize for bringing the Mary Rose to life. Don't know what the Mary Rose was? Read this book and meet the sailors who crewed her and the technology that made her. If you read one history book this year; this should be it; you will not be disappointed.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. great book; Brian Lavery knows His Wooden warBy Customergreat book ;Brian Lavery knows His Wooden war ships
