Contrary to what many people believe; America did not fight her first World War in the trenches of Western Europe in 1917-1918. The first world war in which America was involved was fought on our native soil; with an impact on our nation's history at lieast as significant as that of the 1917-1918 war. It determined once and for all which power would dominate in North America; England or France. This popular; accessible; short history has been completely rewritten for this second edition and new illustrations have been added.

Boris Sokolov is one of my favorite authors; I have several his books; including the biographies of Zhukov and of Beria. The life of Rokossovsky is written in clear concise style; gives many details (for instance the circumstance of his two years in prison during the Stalinist purges). I appreciate in Sokolovs writing his critical approach to all Soviet myths and legends. I certainly would recommend this book to anybody interested in the war on the Eastern front. Marshal Rokossovsky was present at the most spectaculr battles of this war - border battles 41; Smolensk 41; Moscow 41-42; Stalingrad 42-43; Kursk 43; Bielorussia 44; Poland 44-45; Germany 45.I only regret that there are no more maps in this book and those present are rather simplistic and crude. The only anoying thing for me twas to read the book in English (a have read all other authors books in Russian). Normally to read in English language would not be a problem; here however are many original texts from Soviet official sources and it seems abit weird to see all these marxist expression translated into English - very unusual feeling.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This an excellent review of Rokossovsky's lifeBy john fowlesseThis an excellent review of Rokossovsky's life. The man who destroyed Hitler at Stalingrad certainly merits more historical prominence and this book provides some of that.5 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Wish it had been betterBy Robert E. KatzSomehow; the author does not capture the main interest I had in this man.: how could someone who had his teeth knocked out by the KGB remain loyal to Stalin? The book was heavy on unit listings and short on analysis. Likely; the translation did not help.
