March 1917: On the Brink of War and Revolution

ebooks March 1917: On the Brink of War and Revolution by Will Englund in History

Description

A comprehensive history of the human sciences-psychology; sociology; anthropology; economics; and political science-from their precursors in early human culture to the present. This erudite yet accessible volume in Norton's highly praised History of Science series tracks the long and circuitous path by which human beings came to see themselves and their societies as scientific subjects like any other. Beginning with the Renaissance's rediscovery of Greek psychology; political philosophy; and ethics; Roger Smith recounts how the human sciences gradually organized themselves around a scientific conception of psychology; and how this trend has continued to the present day in a circle of interactions between science and ordinary life; in which the human sciences have influenced and been influenced by popular culture.

A top-notch look at at one of history's pivotal momentsBy SkraelingUnbelievably comprehensive; this book explains in great but highly readable detail why March was the crucial month in the crucial year 1917. Why 1917? In Russia the czar was forced from office; modified chaos reigned and the British and French were struggling to keep Russia as an ally in the war with Germany. In America; Wilson had just been re-elected on the slogan that he had kept us out of the war; but pressures were mounting; both domestically and internationally; that were challenging that stand. Dropping the czar had worldwide reperssions; that continue to this day. Similarly entering the war inflated America's status in the world. The book doesn't just concentrate on the two principals. Jeannette Rankin; James Reese Europe and Marguerite Harrison keep adding to the story in fascinating detail. For a first-rate look at the moment when the world was undergoing a cataclysmic change; it would be hard to beat this account.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great Book.By Michael ChristopherBest material found anywhere on events which drew United States into World War One. Discussions on Russian Revolution are good but contain nothing new for scholars of Russian history.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely wonderful writing!By Larry BowersGreat book! Will Englund has done incredible research and tells much about this very important period of time. I can't compliment his writing style enough. This book matters and should be read by anyone interested in the events that changed the world in the early 20th C.
