MARINE CORPS TANK BATTLES IN KOREA

DOC MARINE CORPS TANK BATTLES IN KOREA by Oscar E. Gilbert in History

Description

Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson (1902-1994); the Lubavitcher Rebbe; took an insular Chasidic group that was almost decimated by the Holocaust and transformed it into one of the most influential and controversial forces in world Jewry. This superbly crafted biography draws on recently uncovered documents and archives of personal correspondence; painting an exceptionally human and charming portrait of a man who was well known but little understood. With a sharp attention to detail and an effortless style; Chaim Miller takes us on a soaring journey through the life; mind and struggles of one of the most interesting religious personalities of the Twentieth Century. “Only truly great biographers have been able to accomplish what Chaim Miller has with this book... I am awed by his work; and am now even more awed than ever before by the Rebbe’s personality and prodigious accomplishments.” —Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb; Executive Vice President Emeritus; Orthodox Union; Editor-in-Chief; Koren-Steinsaltz Talmud "A riveting biography…. this will prove to be a fascinating read even for those distant from Chabad or who knew little about this dominant figure in Jewish life." Malcolm Hoenlein; Executive Vice Chairman; Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.

The author is a Marine artilleryman who knows and writes knowledgeably about Marines and the Marine Corps. Although his MOS was not in armor when he served in the Corps; he certainly did his research by examining the documentation and interviewing the participants to write a compelling history of this particular branch of the Marine Corps. Not only does the author tell compelling stories of what the Marine tankers experienced; but he places their actions and contributions into the proper context regarding the infantry units they supported; as well as in the context of their contributions to the battles fought. Of all the books I have read about armored troops in combat; this is by far the best in describing the day-to-day realities of armored combat as well as the responsibilities of armored troops to their equipment and their fellow Marines. Outstanding work; and one I can highly recommend to anyone who finds this subject even a little interesting.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This book is SemperFi.By Leigh W ColeMr. Gilbert is a brother Marine and knows these men. While I was reading this; Captain Sweet passed. I contacted his Marine Corp League Post and received back a wonderful e mail from one of the Marines who served with these men. They mentioned Mr. Gilbert by name. That should tell you all you need to know. Very well written; filled with first person accounts. To me; that is essential. He lets the Marines tell the story themselves. As a retired Marine armor unit veteran myself; this book is on the top of my list. I am reading his "Marine Tank Battles in the Pacific" now as well. Get both. You won't be disappointed. My friend Cecil Fullerton signed this book for me. When I asked him to sign it he said "you make me seem like a hero". I laughed for two days about that...
