Lutherans in America: A New History

audiobook Lutherans in America: A New History by Mark Granquist in History

Description

Edgar M. Bronfman's clarion call to a generation of secular; disaffected; and unaffiliated Jews; this book addresses the most critical question confronting Judaism worldwide. Completed in December 2013; just weeks before he passed away; WHY BE JEWISH? expresses Edgar Bronfman's awe; respect; and deep love for his faith and heritage. Bronfman walks readers through the major tenets and ideas in Jewish life; fleshing out their meaning and offering proof texts from the Jewish tradition gleaned over his many years of study with some of the greatest teachers in the Jewish world. With honesty; poignancy; and passion; Bronfman shares In WHY BE JEWISH? insights gleaned from his own personal journey and makes a compelling case for the meaning and transcendence of a secular Judaism that is still steeped in deep moral values; authentic Jewish texts; and a focus on deed over creed or dogma.

Granquist moves beyond the near exclusive focus on theology; institutions; and merger; which occupied the attention of historians of previous generations. His is a more balanced approach; incorporating discussion of how Lutheranism was lived out among the people as well as making sure to situate discussion of Lutheran life in the broader context of American life in each era under discussion. He also cautiously discusses the recent turbulent history of American Lutherans. Overall a very helpful work and breath of fresh air.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good read.By CustomerFascinating historical review of Lutheranism in the US. Many years ago read Lutheranism in North America 1914-1970 by Nelson. This adds more and gives some insight into Lutheranism in Colonial America. It also tries to show how Lutherans transitioned into an America church body and then the attempts to unite all Lutherans into one church body. Good read.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great Book! It is a must read for those ...By Thomas H WalkerGreat Book!
