This is a gloriously illustrated and fascinating history of Mauritius - heart of the 'Spice Route' for over 200 years. This is the engrossing story of Mauritius; the exotic Indian Ocean island port of call at the heart of the fabled 'Spice Route'. Although first discovered and visited by the Arabs and the Portuguese; and subsequently colonised by the Dutch; the French and the English; it is the French influence that is most keenly felt in Mauritius today; thanks to France's nearly century-long rule over Mauritius from 1715 to 1810. Combining rich historical detail; rare archival documents; antique lithographs paintings; and portraits; and fascinating stories of well-known figures of the period - like the founder of the colony Governor Mahe de La Bourdonnais; the explorer and botanist Pierre Poivre; and the celebrated explorer Jean-Francois de Laperouse - "Mauritius on the Spice Route" is an invitation to step back in time and discover the fascinating history of this exotic paradise.

This one was unique in that the main characters were in hiding throughout the war and gradually emerged as the war was ending. Heller's descriptions of the miseries they endured were well-written and powerful; however I had trouble remembering who was who among the family members and friends; and would have appreciated some reminders throughout the book. It is amazing that Mrs. Heller went on to live a loving and productive life after everything she witnessed and experienced during the war. The rabid anti-Semitism of the Ukrainians and Poles was horrifying; I was not aware of the scope and intensity of it although I always knew it existed. The author very bravely revealed personal emotions and situations in her life; and has done the world a favor by sharing her life and experiences in this book.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fanya's heart wrenching story!By maureen digiglioExcellent well told story of how a young Jewish woman went through the horror of staying alive during the Nazi regime. After learning about the death of her immediate family; by her wits and will to live she did everything possible; and most of what she had to endure was very difficult. This story captures the evil that fell upon the Jewish people; and gives insight to how they were treated by the Nazis; and others; and one woman's struggle to endure not knowing if she would live or die each day. A few people did help her; and without their help she may not have survived the horror. I am sure that the reader will be most glad that she did survive to tell her heart wrenching tale.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. IncredibleBy E. CartwrightThis book touched me beyond belief. Born; Sept 27; 1939; I knew nothing of the holocaust until I was in my twenties. I have read many books about it since but I totally blamed the Holocaust on the Nazis and some of the German people. This book made me see how great the hatred of Jews was among the common people not just in Germany. Without this hatred among so many; I do not think the Holocaust would have happened. I see now how evil can overcome people so easily. The book also shows how some few can resist the evil at the risk of their lives and some resist the evil but are gradually overcome by it. I will not soon forget this book or stop thinking about it.
