DOC Louis Bamberger: Department Store Innovator and Philanthropist (Brandeis Series in American Jewish History; Culture; and Life) by Linda B. Forgosh in History

Description

The rich tradition of the San Francisco Giants has provided indelible memories for their fans ever since they moved from New York’s Polo Grounds to Seals Stadium in 1958. With three World Series titles in five years; starting in 2010; the San Francisco Giants have established themselves as one of the powerhouse teams of the 21st century. Led by pitcher Madison Bumgarner; the Giants have come to dominate the baseball scene. Fans continue to flock to ATT Park to support their team; and will find just as much excitement within the pages of the newly updated Tales from the San Francisco Giants Dugout. Author Nick Peters captures some of the humorous and poignant moments of the team’s years on the West Coast. From the intense rivalry with the Dodgers and the age of Willie Mays to amazing World Series victories; this book has all that a Giants fan needs and will certainly want. Skyhorse Publishing; as well as our Sports Publishing imprint; are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball; pro football; college football; pro and college basketball; hockey; or soccer; we have a book about your sport or your team. Whether you are a New York Yankees fan or hail from Red Sox nation; whether you are a die-hard Green Bay Packers or Dallas Cowboys fan; whether you root for the Kentucky Wildcats; Louisville Cardinals; UCLA Bruins; or Kansas Jayhawks; whether you route for the Boston Bruins; Toronto Maple Leafs; Montreal Canadiens; or Los Angeles Kings; we have a book for you. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller; we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

This is a story about a shy philanthropist who made his fortune by creating the Bamberger Department Store. How do you write a story about a great man who didn’t like the limelight; didn’t write books or keep a diary; and often preferred to be silent about his generosity? Linda Forgosh delved into hard to find resources to provide us with a fascinating and fact based story of a man who left a wonderful legacy but is mostly unknown today. Do you know where the Macy’s parade in NYC first began or who started it? What was the connection between Louis Bamberger and Albert Einstein? How did the Institute for Advance Study in Princeton begin? As many other authors; Forgosh investigated published sources like books and newspapers. She went a step beyond in her research -- she interviewed family members and past employees and their families; going into family archives and documents for little known facts. She searched into archives for unpublished documents including archives of the Institute for Advance Study; the Library of Congress; the Jewish Historical Society of New Jersey and the New Jersey Historical Society. The result is a fun; fact based book that creates a picture of the man and his times; a book I thoroughly enjoyed reading.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. AnagnostThis is a very nicely done book and would be a fine read for someone interested in this aspect of American social history. The chronicle of the Bamberger story to envision and bring forth the department store and a center for city life and the giving back to community is a wonderful description of American growth. Ms.Forgosh's details about the family background; Newark's urban growth; and the generous charitable giving; especially funding the Institute for Advanced Study; are interesting and well-presented. She is a gifted writer who knows the subject well.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Good and Decent ManBy Jo-Ann WolskyA good story about a humble man. Factual and and interesting story about the man behind Bamberger's. You will enjoy this story even if you're not from New Jersey.
