The establishment of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission was a pioneering international event. Never had any country sought to move forward from despotism to democracy both by exposing the atrocities committed in the past and achieving reconciliation with its former oppressors. At the center of this unprecedented attempt at healing a nation has been Archbishop Desmond Tutu; whom President Nelson Mandela named as Chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. With the final report of the Commission just published; Archbishop Tutu offers his reflections on the profound wisdom he has gained by helping usher South Africa through this painful experience. In No Future Without Forgiveness; Tutu argues that true reconciliation cannot be achieved by denying the past. But nor is it easy to reconcile when a nation "looks the beast in the eye." Rather than repeat platitudes about forgiveness; he presents a bold spirituality that recognizes the horrors people can inflict upon one another; and yet retains a sense of idealism about reconciliation. With a clarity of pitch born out of decades of experience; Tutu shows readers how to move forward with honesty and compassion to build a newer and more humane world.

Astonishing Tale of Isolation and SurvivalBy Roberta Nordheim-WallaceThis book is an absolute must-read for anyone who thinks they know something about wilderness survival. The story would be crazy if it weren't true... a family of "Old Believers" chooses the harshest; most difficult possible existence in the wilds of Siberia over continuing to live in the modern world. Most amazing; they succeed to the point that the single survivor; a woman; continues to live in that unforgiving environment by choice. The translation is solid and it's tough to put this one down; it's that compelling a read. I cannot say enough about it--I read a copy loaned me by a friend and was so moved I had to order my own copy. This one's a keeper.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. true storyBy EleniFascinating and unusual true story! A good read but there are typos and in some parts the sentence construction is poor because of the translator0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating; true story of a religious family living in the wilderness.By ireneiFascinating book. This is the story of how scientists on a mission in the Taiga (Siberian forest) stumbled upon a crude cabin which housed a family of "Old Believers"; very religious Russian Orthodox people. The parents fled persecutions in Russia and went deep into the Taiga; where they had children and raised their family. Their resulting perspective and way of life is something astounding. (Imagine never seeing anyone outside your own family and never having tasted bread; yet knowing the forest like the back of your hand and being so devoted to your religion.)This is a must-read. There is a documentary on the same subject on YouTube; both in Russian and in English. The book shipped in great condition and in a timely fashion. This story is a must-read.
