LangnerOur family moved to New Mexico in the US southwest in 1957 as my father was recovering from tuberculosis -- the dry southwest desert air proved very good for his health; as it had for many members of the Trudeau society. As a teen-ager in the late 1950's I encountered many families with unfamiliar names -- Abousleman; Tabet; Maloof; Fidel; Hindi; and other non-English and non-Hispanic names. They were always a mystery to me. In the pages of this book; the author traces the arrival of many Middle Eastern families' arrival into New Mexico. For history buffs; and in particular; for southwest history buffs; this is one great read! Thanks to author Monika Ghattas for providing this definitive history of Middle Eastern immigrants into New Mexico and into the southwestern US. No dry collection of facts and figures here -- it's storytelling at its best! It's a great read; and I recommend it heartily!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great reference book on New Mexico historyBy DesLoved the book. It was great to find out more on New Mexico history and the people who settled the state. It provides more detailed information on the "Anglo" population.0 of 2 people found the following review helpful. History of Arabs in the USBy Rafik KmeidThis book contained many interesting stories but it had too much of an academic flavor. It would have been more interesting if it would have been written in a more story-telling manner.
