Lincoln's Generals' Wives: Four Women Who Influenced the Civil War--for Better and for Worse (Civil War in the North)

ebooks Lincoln's Generals' Wives: Four Women Who Influenced the Civil War--for Better and for Worse (Civil War in the North) by Candice Shy Hooper in History

Description

This book deals with Stonewall Jackson and his relationship with the town of Winchester; Virginia; and will cover the period beginning in June; 1861 and end with his death in May; 1863. Many accounts of Jackson's life describe him as peculiar both in his habits and in his religious beliefs. For most Americans; particularly today; those character traits are somewhat strange. But to the people of Winchester; Virginia during the 1860s; they were neither strange nor peculiar because they represented the beliefs of the vast majority of the people of the Shenandoah Valley. This; plus his spectacular successes on the battlefield in the Shenandoah Valley endeared the people of Winchester to Jackson in a way that no other personality ever did (and that includes a 10 year stay in the town by George Washington).

GradWhat a wonderful book. While well researched and documented; it tells a tale never heard before. Behind every great man there is a woman. Which- may or not be the case amount these four couples. Big book and I couldn't put it down !0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. General's WivesBy DThis is an important book for anyone who is interested in the civil war. Most of the factual books about women are about caring for the wounded service men or masquerading as men so they could fight. This one is different in that is shows that even in a society that women had very little power financially or politically; they found ways to influence the war's outcome.
