The complete story of the American Constitution; told in the words of those who created it. Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Michael Kammen has gathered together the fundamental documents needed to understand the genesis and evolution of the United States Constitution—from the exploratory notions concerning the nature of constitutions in 1776; the Articles of Confederation in 1777; and various constitutional plans proposed at the Philadelphia Convention in 1787; to the advocacy position of “Publius†in the 21 most important Federalist papers and contrasting views offered by leading Anti-Federalist dissenters. Kammen also includes private correspondence that passed between prominent founders during the crucial years 1787 to 1789 (58 revealing letters); along with the Judiciary Act of 1789 and the Bill of Rights; which completed the basic structure of government and provided essential security for its citizens. Taken together; these are the great state papers that illuminate America’s brilliant and unique contribution to the history of political thought and democratic values.

For anyone that has concerns with the changes happening in our own republic this is a shocking read. Lenin; Stalin and Hitler with their political ideology slipped into Nazi and Soviet totalitarianism with the support of their countrymen by promising change and better times until it was too late. The full story unfolds as these gain power and what was seen as ideals turns into nightmares. This is compelling history but could it be a warning for the future.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I would definitely recommend this book!By David D. CannonI've always wanted to read about Hitler and Stalin to learn about them as men; but also what the world circumstances were like during that time to allow two such vicious and evil people obtain so much power. This book allowed me to do that without investing hours and hours reading multiple books on the subject. It did a good job of illustrating how they both came into power (with the added bonus of Lenin) and compared their two different styles of ruthlessness. Even though it got a little tedious at times it was still a good read and I now feel I have a much better understanding of what they were like and what happened.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
