The respect for religious difference has formed the bedrock of our nation and made equality possible. Yet today we are told that “moral valuesâ€Â—code for a government shaped by religious concerns—must be the keystone of our social compact.A rich and compelling chronicle of an essential idea; Liberty of Conscience tells the story of America's great tradition of religious freedom. Philosopher Martha Nussbaum's ambitious book is both a work of history and a pointed rejoinder to conservative efforts to break down barriers between church and state.

Marks Jr.gI'm Hispanic and this book really helped to inform me of the Latino experience of the Mexican; Puertorrican; and Domincan experience in different eras and regions of the United States. I would recommend this book to anyone hispanic and non hispanic alike who are interested in the history of Latino people in the USA. I read the book in Spanish; but this book is also available in English for those who do not understand Spanish. Reading this book one comes to understand that like Black History; Latino History is not just the story of Latinos in the United States; it is an integral part of American History in all its complexity.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great take on US history; a perspective not covered in schoolsBy Molly RoloffI had to get this book for a college course; and wouldn't normally have bought it; but it was very very good. Written in a very engaging style and walked through the history of latin americans in what is today the United States; from Spanish conquest of south/central america; to colonization of the north; to migrant workers rights movement of the 60s/70s; to modern immigration issues. Like a history of the US but from a hispanic/latin american perspective instead of a British/European perspective. Very interesting. Explains big over-arching historical trends while also zooming in on specific people and conflicts that make the history come alive.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Bought it for my College CourseBy KaSua VIt came in perfect; pristine condition. Everything is written in Spanish; black and white photos are in the text; some photos have English text. Starts with colonial days and the spread of the Spanish empire across the Americas. Written in a narrative format more than the boring historical textbook. As a Spanish Language Learner; it's challenging to read; but if I really try and read it a few times; I understand it.
