I particularly enjoyed the opening chapter quotes. They resonated with me. The author provided insight about the most remarkable women. Women who were pioneers.I give Leslie-Poling Kempes books as gifts. They help me explain why I love New Mexico and in particular Ghost Ranch. Her fiction provides the emotion to the intellectual fuel of her non-fiction.15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating women come alive in adventurous and dramatic life stories!By Maida TilchenReading this book is like having the stiff-looking ladies in old photos come alive and walk off the page; telling the stories of their fascinating lives. There's more drama and adventure than you would ever expect! If Southwest and/or women's history is your delight; you will love this book. Poling-Kempes digs deeper into the lives of some of the women included in her wonderful earlier nonfiction books; Ghost Ranch and Valley of Shining Stone; adding an often surprising and always entertaining cast of real-life sojourners and lovers of the Southwest. She has done an amazing feat of research to find out so many lively stories about women and men who have mostly been remembered only by names on title pages or in sparse footnotes until now. The text; extensive notes; and bibliography may well send history buffs on many new research trails. Thank you!7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Relive the Winning of the West by The Ladies of the CanyonsBy Rhondda Evans HartmanA marvelous historical account of the women who loved and changed the southwest; especially New Mexico. If you love Santa Fe; Taos and the surrounding areas; you will love this book. It tells of the art center that was set up there. The art Museum which was built in the Indian Pueblo style.Artists; writers and musicians came; loved it and asked their friends to join them. They appreciated the Indian culture and convinced the Government agencies to allow the Indians to continue their customs; music and art. The Ladies of the Canyons were true pioneers and changed the settling of the Southwest by appreciating it as it was ..not trying to change it to the way they had been raised in the east of USA. It will make you want to go back for another visit. Or if you do not know the area; you will no doubt put it on your Bucket List!Rhondda Evans Hartman; Author of Natural Childbirth Exercises
