Journey to the Sun: Junipero Serra's Dream and the Founding of California

DOC Journey to the Sun: Junipero Serra's Dream and the Founding of California by Gregory Orfalea in History

Description

This comparative text provides an understanding of major world criminal justice systems by discussing and comparing the systems of six of the world’s countries: England; France; Russia; China; Japan; and a new chapter on South Africa―each representative of a different type of legal system. An additional chapter on Islamic law uses Saudi Arabia; Iran; and Turkey as main examples. Political; historical; organizational; procedural; and critical issues confronting the justice systems are explained and analyzed. Each chapter contains material on government; police; judiciary; law; corrections; juvenile justice; and other critical issues.

WIth the pending canonization of Fra Junipero Serrra in September ...By Jerry DrinoWIth the pending canonization of Fra Junipero Serrra in September; it is important to know the breadth and depth of his life; vision and commitment. With mounting controversy over his being made a saint; this focus needs to be a vehicle to enter a deeper dialog about European contact and colonization in the Americas. The past cannot be healed unless it is first recovered. "Journey to the Sun" is one of those tools to make this possible. The Rev. We bought one for a friend who cruises his boat in the Sea of Cortez and loves local history; and says he loves it. We bought one for ourselves; and are enjoying it in small bites. It's obviously excellently researched; great as a resource; not light reading.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Educational and entertainingBy john garippaI must admit; I originally ordered this book because I love Carmel; California and I was interested in hearing some history about my favorite town. However; after finishing the book; Orfalea has left me with a tremendous respect for Serra and the other Spanish missionaries. It was fascinating to learn about the people behind the names of California cities; towns; and roadways. I also loved his treatment of the Catholic religion. I believe he painted a fair picture of the tension that exists between national conquest and honest evangelism. I highly recommend this book.
