A Unique Biography of the Irish Submarine PioneerBy John JoyceTo my knowledge; this is the only biography of the Irish submarine pioneer John Phillip Holland and takes us from his birth in Liscannor; Co. Clare in Ireland; to his emigration to America; his involvement with the Finian Movement and his development of the modern submarine. What raises this above the dry historical fact of many such biographies is the background information on Holland's character; his early years in Ireland; his interest in technology while studying to be a priest and his attachment to the Finian Movement for a United Ireland. Indeed; the book reveals that one of the main driving forces behind modern submarine development was Holland's desire to develop a weapon that would at least dent the prestige of the all-powerful British Navy with the primitive submarine - 'The Finian Ram'.As someone who is passionately interested in submarines and indeed has penned a submarine novel Fire Ice; I found this a very readable story as well as a detailed biography for the serious researcher into submarine development; or indeed Irish history.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The early development of the modern submarineBy Donald G. KegelThis book is essential for those interested in the development of the modern submarine. It took a great amount of determinism by John Holland to develop his concepts into a viable submersible; which is a good example for anyone who wants to get their ideas into action. His Holland VI was the basis for at least three of the world's naval powers' submarines who purchased his example for their initial programs as the 20th century opened.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
