Jews in the Mediterranean Diaspora: From Alexander to Trajan (323 BCE–117 CE)

PDF Jews in the Mediterranean Diaspora: From Alexander to Trajan (323 BCE–117 CE) by John M. G. Barclay in History

Description

This colorful; richly textured account of spiritual training and practice within an American Indian social network emphasizes narrative over analysis. Thomas Buckley's foregrounding of Yurok narratives creates one major level of dialogue in an innovative ethnography that features dialogue as its central theoretical trope. Buckley places himself in conversation with contemporary Yurok friends and elders; with written texts; and with twentieth-century anthropology as well. He describes Yurok Indian spirituality as "a significant field in which individual and society meet in dialogue—cooperating; resisting; negotiating; changing each other in manifold ways. 'Culture;' here; is not a thing but a process; an emergence through time."

This was one of the first scholarly books that I have read on the topic of early 2nd Temple Judaism as concerns social assimilation. Barclay goes into much detail about the assimilation of Jews in Hellenistic societies throughout the Diaspora examining language; education; religion; philosophy; and also to what various extents Jews were socially integrated in Graeco-Roman societies.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Definitive Text on the SubjectBy TfrumanI have not finished my review of the material but I have found this incredibly useful so far; especially with the cross references and appendices. Barclay does a splendid job of defnining the Jews in the Diaspora; providing context and understanding of a very complex time and culture.
