In February 1941; Wanda Połtawska was arrested by the Gestapo. She was nineteen years old. Charged with aiding and abetting the resistance movement a heinous crime in Nazi-occupied Poland she was sent to the notorious Ravensbrück concentration camp. And I Am Afraid of My Dreams is Połtawska's account of the four years spent in the camp; where the prospect of death; whether from starvation; exhaustion; or summary execution; was a daily reality. Wanda was used as one of the camps guinea pigs and became a victim of cruel medical experimentation by Nazi doctors. Many of her friends died or were left with horrific physical and psychological injuries as a result of these experiments. Wanda bravely faced each day and pledged to become a doctor if she ever got out alive. Originally written nearly fifty years ago; this powerful story is an enduring testament to the courage of the human spirit.

For the best part of recently published “Jews and UkrainiansBy SERGEY DEZHNYUKFor the best part of recently published “Jews and Ukrainians: A millennium of Co-Existenceâ€; co-authored by Magocsi and Petrovsky-Shtern ; you have to go to the last three pages. There is not much new in the book. Generally; ethic Ukrainians know their history; so do the Ashkenazy Jews from the region. The problem – they don’t know each other’s story…There are plenty of misunderstandings between both groups and dark pages from the mutual history that have to be re-visited and properly addressed. Also; per the long tradition of pitting us against each other; the story of peaceful and mutually beneficial co-existence that marked most of the period when the two peoples lived in the same land needs to be told. This book does both. And does it well. Petrovsky-Shtern’s – arguably; the best living historian of Ashkenazy Jews – contribution to the book is almost impeccable; Magosci; in my humble opinion; could have done a better job in this book.Yet; this is a good book to buy as a gift or your Ukrainian or Jewish friend…The edition is wonderfully illustrated; the book is close to the “coffee table†standard.
