This isn't an ordinary Civil War tale. It is the all-true but little-known story of Adam "Stovepipe" Johnson-Kentucky legend; Texas hero; and Confederate cavalry officer-who boldly led the first Confederate raid across the Mason-Dixon Line to capture the thriving river-port community of Newburgh; Indiana; during the American Civil War. Not a shot was fired. With the politically divided landscape of Civil War Kentucky and the steamboat economy of the Ohio River as its backdrop; this is the historically accurate account of surprise nocturnal strikes; opportunistic military occupations; and a swashbuckling Rebel icon's daring daylight invasion into the Northern homeland that sealed the fate of western Kentucky for the remainder of the war. Vivid; thorough; and painstakingly researched; Thunder from a Clear Sky documents five critical weeks of 1862 Civil War history and shares the untold tale of one man's immeasurable impact on a nation at war."A fascinating account of how a skilled former Indian fighter gathered a few Kentucky rebels and 'woke up' the slumbering Indiana Home Guard."-Evansville Courier Press Book Reviews "An important and; until now; largely neglected story about the American Civil War... Thunder from a Clear Sky stands as a fresh and important contribution in a field long studied."-Professor Randy K. Mills; Ph.D.; Oakland City University; author of Jonathan Jennings: Indiana's First Governor

Stern"Wake up!" is the message of Rabbi Sid Schwartz's third book: the face of Judaism is changing and we as a Jewish community need to come to terms with those changes and proactively do something to address them.Schwartz then offers four possible tools to adapt Judaism to these changing times. The commentaries that follow from a range of rabbis; educators and communal leaders offer a canvas from which readers can then formulate their prescriptions within their own institutions and organizational structures. We at Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Synagogue; the synagogue that Rabbi Sid Schwartz founded twenty five years ago; have been consciously part of an experiment to transform synagogues since our beginning. We now draw lessons from Jewish Megatrends as we continue to evolve to embrace Judaism's dynamic evolution.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An important topic addressedBy BentennesseeRabbi Schwarz writes the introductory and closing chapters of this book; which address how Millenial and Gen X Jews motivations' differ from their elders; the future of Judaism in the diaspora; and what we can do to alter its course. The chapters in between discuss and add to his assertions. I found some of the contributor's thoughts very enlightening. I rolled my eyes a bit at (just a few) others. I think that Jewish leadership and educator's ought to read this book. It is a quick read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Must Reading for all Leaders in the Jewish CommunityBy M. H. MelmedRabbi Schwarz brings together many creative minds to explore the challenges facing the Jewish Community. It is difficulty for one generation to understand other generations especially these days when things move so quickly that even siblings may have a generational divide. With the seductive nature of secular society in America traditional Jewish communal organizations face great challenges to attract younger members. This book articulates well the problems some of the solutions.
