While the entire set of six volumes is a masterpiece; the first volume is something quite special in its own right. Aside from providing the appropriate narrative and analysis of Jefferson's early life; it is a wonderful description of the world of colonial Virginia. As one reads; there comes a sense of a time distant but vital and still influential. After reading the volume; which was very much worth taking time over; I do believe that I have grasped a piece of that world. BarnettThomas Jefferson was one of the most interesting of the Founding Fathers. Born into a family of wealth and means; he became an advocate for everyone. I highly recommend that anyone interested in Jefferson and his philosophy to get this 6-volume series. The only downside is that the books are old and tend to fall apart while actually reading them. Ahh; Dumas Malone; how I love your books about Jefferson...By RBSI read this for AP American History in high school and had to read it again. Yes; it's a hagiography of sorts; but he did win the Pulitzer; so you Jefferson-haters and political-correctness jihadis can stuff it. Thomas Jefferson was one of the most profoundly gifted Americans ever. The fact that we were able to benefit from his public service is nothing short of a miracle. I hope to read the entire series twice. Pick it up if you have 12 months to yourself and a love of this country.
