Jackspeak: A Guide to British Naval Slang and Usage

PDF Jackspeak: A Guide to British Naval Slang and Usage by Rick Jolly in History

Description

The fought like young Nelsons. The words of a schoolmaster; writing from aboard HMS Mars after the battle of Trafalgar; describing the valor of his pupils in the heat of battle. Made immortal by the novels of Patrick O'Brian; C. S. Forester and Alexander Kent; these boy sailors; alongside those of every other Royal Navy ship; had entered the British Navy to fight the French across every ocean of the world. There was a long-standing British tradition of children going to sea; of boys who volunteered to fight for Britain; and along the way found adventure; glory; wealth and fame. During the Napoleonic Wars; these children; some as young as eight or nine; were also fighting for the very survival of Britain. For twenty years; the image of young Nelsons on the frontline of war caught the imagination of the nation. Drawing on many first-hand accounts; letters; poems and writings; this book tells the dramatic story of Britain's boy sailors during the Napoleonic Wars for the very first time.

Jolly and Tugg deserve gulpers for this one!By Der GrafAbsolutely sheer; total; and utterly utter delight for all who have served; serve; will or may serve in the Royal Navy; and for all with merely an interest in it's affairs going beyond knowing who Nelson was. Plus a significant contribution to the unique tradition of Jack and his inimitable ability to 'ave 'is tickler and see the bloody twelve roll on. Captain Jolly and Tugg bring back the days that seem to disappear slowly under the pressure of awkward modernity; fiscal cuts; and political correctness. For this book; CALL BOTH WATCHES OF HANDS!2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An amusing and important work.By resqspcThe armed services of every nation have their own slang and usage that grows up in separation of their parent societies. Often; it derives from historical usage and expeience. Thus; we have Surgeon Captain Rick Jolly (RN; ret)'s attempt to provide a one-volume reference for the naval veteran; new sailor; buff; and the morbidly curious alike. Reptinted three times and updated once in 1999; the book serves as a collection of snapshots of all things British navy going back to at least the Second World War. Highly recommended as a standard reference.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. this English to English dictionary is wonderful.By CustomerHilariously informative. this English to English dictionary is wonderful.
