Inga: Kennedy's Great Love; Hitler's Perfect Beauty; and J. Edgar Hoover's Prime Suspect

audiobook Inga: Kennedy's Great Love; Hitler's Perfect Beauty; and J. Edgar Hoover's Prime Suspect by Scott Farris in History

Description

Beyond Courage recounts several inspiring feats of escape and evasion by downed airmen during the Korean conflict. The airmen endured incredible hardships; first at the hands of their captors; then as they managed; by one means or another; to make their way back to the safety of U.N. lines. As preparation for the book; author Clay Blair researched the military’s incident records; then interviewed the survivors themselves to fill in any gaps in the accounts told to Air Force officers shortly after their rescue; and to recapture their personal reactions to their arduous adventures. The stories include members of the U.N. forces in Korea—not solely Americans—but also Turks and Greeks and ‘ROKs' (Republic of Korea soldiers); and friendly North Korean Christians; who risked their lives to help downed airmen. In addition to enemy soldiers; the terrain and climate posed terrible challenges to men without adequate food; clothing; or shelter. In the story Cold; for example; one can feel the sub-zero temperatures as the escapee struggles to walk for miles with frozen feet (doctors would later be forced to amputate both feet to save the airman’s life). Challenges were also psychological; as portrayed in the first story; Robinson Crusoe of MiG Alley. There; a downed airman recounts his shattering loneliness of a month spent on a deserted island—with friendly planes flying over almost daily but ignorant of the plight of the stranded airman below them. Despite the passage of 60 years since the cessation of this ‘forgotten war;’ the stories in Beyond Courage remain a testament to the power of human endurance and will in the face of extreme; life-threatening challenges.

If I could ask SF a few questions they would be as follows:1. What led you to selecting Inga Arvad. 2. J. Edgar had a stash of private stuff he kept sub rosa from outside eyes. How did you gain access to that info? Was it all recovered after his death or was it burned? 3. What is the story of J. Edgar - heterosexual or homosexual deep in the closet? Crossdresser or not? 4. Was Inga monogamous; one man at a time? Did she love all of them or some for utilitarian reasons? 5. What information was the hardest to find and cite as a factual source? This would be a great TV movie in segments - Netflix or HBO; whatever. As Inga; I would like to see Marion Cotillard who is now 41 years old. Dye her hair blonde. Altogether; you have to admire the NOTES section which is meticulousPart 2. I have finished the second half of this lovely book. I only read it while doing laundry. My way of savoring the books I like. In those weeks; each 70 minutes were delightful. As I read it; I began to fall in love with Inga as the woman who comes along once in a lifetime. She had the sad fortune of sometimes falling for otherwise unavailable men. I heard myself saying "Inga; stay away from this guy; nothing will come of it." Timing and circumstance seem to be everything in this life. In the first half of the book; I wrote a review which was actually a series of questions to the author. Low and behold; he answered each one. How nice was that? He wrote this book with a certain sensitivity to women of that period. Women who did not enjoy equal status to men in so many ways. So Mr. Farris; I'll be reading your other books. Of that you can be sure. But I'm busting to know what you're working on now as well. This was a hidden jewel. May you discover many more. If I were one of her sons; I'd be very happy in the way you portrayed her.15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Page-turner; detailing an unbelievable lifeBy braveskimomA biography of Inga Arvad; a Danish beauty queen turned journalist who was JFK's great love and an accused Nazi spy. It's a page-turner with lots of history borne of an astounding amount of research. Gossipy; yet informative; a portrait of a remarkable and misunderstood woman; caught in the glare of politics and ambition. The chapters are short and the writing is breezy. If you avoid weighty historical biography;have no fear. Inga is a pleasurable escape; not a boring lesson.8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. I highly recommend Inga by Scott FarrisBy LaRueI highly recommend Inga by Scott Farris. Scott did an excellent job of telling Inga's story; but I was also fascinated by all the intrigue that involved the Kennedy's and J. Edgar Hoover. This book is going to make a great Christmas gift to friends and relatives.
