Solid content but poor qualityBy Van K.After an unforgettable experience in India; we have looked for a quality coffee table book that would capture some of the amazing sites we had seen; as well as the people of India; the vivid colors that mark their festivals and a bit of ordinary life - a book that would stir memories and perhaps call us back to India in the future. Many of the more widely praised books on India capture only faces (or colors; or nobility or trucks or buildings) and we have found it very difficult to find all these in one beautiful book. From the description; we thought India Unveiled would be the perfect choice. The content is great; but the quality looks cheap. The paper is glossy and the photographs are without depth and richness - like vintage coffee table books of several decades ago. The cover is a tacky glossy finish as well; with a glossy book jacket. If you are looking for a reference book to put on your shelf; India Unveiled may be just what you're looking for but we would never display this. Had it been well done; India Unveiled would have been a keeper. As it is; we are returning it disappointed.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent and thoroughBy SoundlessRoarThe Sixth Edition of the beautifully produced; multi-award winning coffee table book; India Unveiled; is stunning! The new volume contains 84 additional pages and 307 photographs reproduced on acid-free archival paper. In addition; the non-photographic content has been strengthened considerably. With an eye toward furthering understanding and neutralizing prejudice toward differences in our society today; this updated version acknowledges India's modernity while giving full credence and more explanation of ancient Hinduism; Jainism; Buddhism; and Sikhism; the four religions that originated in India.Arnett and Turakhia weave in discussion and photographs of the spirit; tradition; and people in such a way that the reader understands that India’s cultural legacy is a living history that is being played out right now. The book treats each subject with a sensitivity that almost anyone can read and gain a clearer understanding of each topic and come away with a deeper respect for India’s cultural and geographic diversity. The book has an excellent glossary that is extremely useful for first-time readers of India. There is also a timeline of India and the World. From the soaring temple gates of Tamil Nadu to the delicately carved marble temples of Jainism; to the Sikh Golden Temple in Amritsar; to the spectacular arati ceremony at Hardwar; India Unveiled truly reveals the diversity and sacredness of the oldest continuously living civilization on earth. It will be the centerpiece of discussions in many homes where there is curiosity about the world and a respect for its inhabitants.
