It draws upon newspaper accounts from each town in a meticulously researched and even-handed way. Tells the story of the war from the viewpoint of the ordinary man; in such a way that you find yourself understanding "the other side". This is not a sentimental book about "our brave boys in blue or gray"- it portrays much of the heartbreak of this war. The language is almost lyrical. The book came about from a university project; yet it lacks clunky academia-ese. I took much longer to read this than most books; as something to savor and consider. Best book on this subject I have ever read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
