MasseyAuthor Ray Mathis was taken from the historic community at a relatively young age; but this work continues to resonate with those of us who value well researched work. This book has been out of print for a while and I was delighted to see it back. As someone who has visited the Chickamauga/Chattanooga area multiple times a year for eons; these letters written by soldiers from many places that I have visited; brings home a reality of war. It gives us a glimpse of what the common soldier felt; what he saw; and how much he missed his loved ones at home. This book is solidly researched and is another of those books we should all have on our shelves. If places like Vicksburg; Chickamauga; Chattanooga; Tullahoma; Barrnacas; Tinersville; Dalton; and many other familiar; and not so familiar; places are included as places where a soldier sent a letter home to a loved one.
